Q. How can I find a list of members of this group ?
Go to http://groups.google.com/group/nvrs-hri-gg/web/list-of-members . This is a "Members only" page.
So if you cant see it, then you are probably not a member of the group
(or more exactly, when your computer talked to gg, it failed to convince them that you are a member.
Most probably there is no gg cookie on your computer)
Alternative route to seeing the list of members.
I thought that Members of this group would be be able to click on the word "Members" in the sidebar;
right hand side of this screen, (third item down, after "Home" and "Discussions").
But David Wurr, who is a member, says he hasn't got that option in his sidebar.
Perhaps only Managers (thats me) have this sidebar ???
Feedback appreciated
Click on the phrase "Apply for group membership" in the sidebar, right hand side of this screen, (second item down, after "About this group"), and follow the instructions
But n.b. if you pretend that your name is Tiffany or Sagilubahupoy or Jerry or Helga M. or Chelsea or etc etc ... and you just want to join so that you can sell us spam and pron, fergeddit
Once you are a member of the group, you can see the members only pages, and you can take part in the group Discussions (see next Q., How does the group Discussion work?)
If you are a member of the group, you will receive copies of all emails sent to the group (unless you opt for something different - see para 3. below).
Each email to the group will arrive in your inbox as soon as it is sent (i.e. lots per day, if the group is very active) (it isn't)
Your emailer programme will say that the email came from nvrs-hri-gg@googlegroups.com
If you reply to one of these emails (by writing to nvrs-hri-gg@googlegroups.com) then your email
will be forwarded to all members of the group and
will be archived in NVRS-HRI-gg Discussions (second item down in sidebar, right hand of this screen
In spite of what it says in 1. above, you don't have to "receive copies of all emails sent to the group". This is just the default setting. The alternatives are to receive all emails once per day in a "digest", or to receive none at all, and read the RSS feed instead. If you prefer one of these options, just ask and I'll change the settings on your account.
Or your computer has failed to tell Google Groups that you are a member.
Your computer should have "cookies" that do this automagically for you
Have you changed computers since you joined the group?
Or have you spring-cleaned your computer and deleted those cookies??
For what its worth, I found the following GG cookies
"HSID", "SID", "NID", "PREF", "GSC", "GTZ", "GPC", "GROUPS_SID",
perhaps you should have some or all of these too
If you really are a member (you get our emails) and you really can't access those pages
then please contact me (rch). This seems to be a bug that Google knows about.
The bug gets worse - see my report (2010-04-30) to Google's own Group Is-something-broken
As yet, no-one has offered a fix
Q. I understand HTML. Can I help improve the page layout ?
Yes please.
The first thing to do is to browse around Google groups and find pages that look better than ours.
Then read the source, and see how they did it.
You will not be able to use your favourite CSS or javascript tricks.
Even if you write plain HTML (by using the Google groups editor in "Edit HTML." mode),
all that css and javascript stuff will be stripped out when the page is saved to the GG server.
Q. What is the difference between being
(a.) a member of Google Groups, and
(b.) a member of this group ?
You can be a member of either, neither or both
I think that states a. and b. are completely uncorrelated, orthogonal, and mutually independent.
